Ljubljana Castle, reachable by a short funicular ride, offers panoramic views over the city's terracotta rooftops and the surrounding hills. The Triple Bridge and Dragon Bridge, both distinctive architectural landmarks, anchor the riverside old town, which is best explored slowly with stops at the many cafés lining the Ljubljanica. The Central Market, designed by celebrated Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik, is worth a visit for its riverside arcade alone.
Lake Bled, about 40 minutes away, is close to essential — its small island church, clifftop castle and alpine backdrop make it one of the most photographed spots in the region. The Julian Alps offer hiking and mountain scenery for travellers with more time to extend beyond a single day trip.
