Cheap Flights to Egypt from the UK

OAG counted around 796 scheduled UK flights to Egypt over the 2025 Christmas fortnight, with Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh leading. Here is how to pick the right resort airport and find a fair fare.

Egypt's place in British winter sun

Egypt is one of the big three winter sun choices for UK travellers, alongside the Canary Islands and Morocco. OAG's analysis of scheduled flights between 20 December 2025 and 4 January 2026 put Egypt on about 796 flights from UK airports, with Hurghada accounting for around 278 and Sharm El Sheikh for about 276 of them.

The reasons are simple. The Red Sea resorts offer reliable sunshine through the winter, warm water, coral reefs a short swim from the beach, and all-inclusive hotels that are often cheaper than comparable ones in Europe. The flight is under six hours, which is long enough to feel like a proper escape without being a long haul.

Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, Marsa Alam and Cairo

Hurghada (HRG) is the biggest resort area, with a long coast of hotels, a lively marina and easy access to snorkelling and diving. Sharm El Sheikh (SSH), at the tip of the Sinai peninsula, is known for its reefs, big hotels and organised resort life.

Marsa Alam (RMF) is quieter and more focused on diving, with fewer flights. Cairo (CAI) and Luxor are the choices for pyramids and the Nile, usually combined with a few days at the sea.

Choose by the holiday you want. For a beach week with snorkelling, Hurghada or Sharm is the obvious choice. For history, fly to Cairo or Luxor, and our Cairo destination guide explains what the capital offers.

Flight time and the time difference

A flight from London to Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh takes about five and a half hours, a little less to Cairo. Egypt is two hours ahead of the UK in winter and one hour ahead during British Summer Time, though Egypt's use of daylight saving has changed in recent years, so check before you travel.

Many UK flights leave in the early morning and land in the afternoon, which gives you most of the first day by the pool. Evening departures from regional airports are also common, and arrive after dark, so check transfer times to your hotel.

Which UK airports fly there

Flights run from Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Stansted, and from Manchester, Birmingham, East Midlands, Bristol, Newcastle, Leeds Bradford, Glasgow and Edinburgh. TUI, Jet2, EgyptAir, easyJet, British Airways and several charter operators fly the routes, and TUI added new winter flights to Marsa Alam and Sharm from several UK airports.

Regional departures are the big advantage of Egypt, since you can fly directly from your local airport. Compare two or three airports, and count the cost of getting there. Our guide to cheap flights from Manchester Airport shows how big regional programmes work.

What a week costs: flights, hotel and extras

A week in a four-star all-inclusive hotel in Hurghada in November might cost £500 to £800 per person as a package from a regional airport, and nearer £1,000 or more at Christmas. Add £100 to £200 for excursions and tips, and the total is often lower than a similar week in the Canaries.

These are only examples, since hotel quality and dates change everything. Look at several hotels, read recent reviews, and check that the transfer time is reasonable. A hotel 40 minutes from the airport on a late flight can make the first night long.

The best months and the cheapest

October to April is the best time, with daytime temperatures from about 22 to 28 degrees and warm sea. This is also the most expensive period, with peaks at Christmas, New Year and the February half-term.

May and June are hot but good value, and July and August are very hot, with temperatures above 35 degrees, though the sea is warm and prices fall. The cheapest weeks are usually early November and late January, when weather is still good and school holidays are over.

When to book

For Christmas and half-terms, book as early as possible, ideally eight to ten months ahead, since the best hotels and flights sell first. For other times, three to five months is usually enough, and package deals appear regularly.

Set a price alert and look at it every few days. If you want the detail behind that advice, read tracking fare drops and the best time to book flights in 2026.

Visas and entry requirements

British citizens need a visa to enter Egypt. You can get a single-entry tourist visa on arrival at the main airports for a fee, currently around 25 US dollars, or apply for an e-visa online in advance. Rules for the Red Sea resorts of South Sinai, including Sharm El Sheikh, have allowed a free entry stamp for stays within the region.

Your passport should be valid for at least six months from arrival. The details change, so check the Egyptian government and UK Foreign Office websites before you travel. Many tour operators arrange visas on arrival as part of the package.

Foreign Office advice

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office publishes travel advice for Egypt, which advises against travel to certain areas, such as parts of North Sinai and some border regions. The main resorts of Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, Marsa Alam, Cairo and Luxor have been open to visitors, but the advice changes.

Check the latest advice before booking and again before you travel, as it may affect your travel insurance. Keep up to date with local news, and follow your hotel's guidance.

Package or flight-only?

Most British visitors to Egypt book packages, because all-inclusive hotels, transfers and flights are bundled and carry ATOL protection. TUI and Jet2holidays are the biggest operators, and the prices often beat what you would pay for flight and hotel separately.

Flight-only suits independent travellers and those combining Egypt with a Nile cruise or a tour. Compare both, and check what is included. Our all-inclusive resorts service and vacation packages service can help.

All-inclusive: what it really covers

All-inclusive in Egypt generally covers meals, snacks, local drinks and use of facilities. Imported spirits, premium drinks, some restaurants and excursions are often extra. Hotel quality varies from basic to luxurious, so read recent reviews and check the star rating.

Tipping is expected, and small amounts for staff are appreciated. Bring small notes in pounds, dollars or Egyptian pounds. A few pounds a day in tips is a normal part of an Egyptian holiday.

Cruises on the Nile and desert tours

A Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan takes three to seven nights, passing temples at Edfu and Kom Ombo, and offers a gentler pace than a bus tour. Prices range from budget to luxury, and winter is the busy season.

Desert trips from Hurghada and Sharm, including quad biking, camel rides and Bedouin dinners, are popular and good value if booked locally. Check the company's safety record, and make sure you have sun protection and plenty of water.

Snorkelling, diving and the Red Sea

The Red Sea is famous for coral reefs, with sites close to the beach in Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh and Marsa Alam, and boat trips to places such as Ras Mohammed National Park and the Giftun Islands. Even beginners can snorkel, and diving courses are cheap.

Choose operators with good safety records, and check that you have suitable insurance for diving. Do not touch coral or feed fish, and use reef-safe sun cream. The water stays warm, at around 22 to 28 degrees, all year.

Cairo, Luxor and the ancient sites

The pyramids of Giza, the Egyptian Museum and the new Grand Egyptian Museum, a huge site near the pyramids that has been opening in phases, are the headline attractions near Cairo. Luxor offers Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and the temples on the Nile.

A day trip to Cairo from Hurghada is possible but long, and a short flight is more comfortable. Many visitors combine a week at the beach with two or three nights in Cairo or Luxor. Book tours with licensed operators and carry plenty of water.

Health, food and staying well

Egypt is hot and sunny, so use high-factor sun cream, drink plenty of bottled water and avoid ice from unknown sources. Stomach upsets are the most common problem, and it helps to eat at busy hotel buffets and avoid raw salads outside your hotel.

Check the NHS Fit for Travel website for vaccination advice, and take out insurance. The GHIC does not cover Egypt. Pack basic medicines and sunburn relief.

Respecting local customs

Egypt is a Muslim-majority country, and dress is more modest outside resorts. Cover shoulders and knees in cities and religious sites, and take care during Ramadan, when daytime eating and drinking in public is less common outside tourist areas.

Alcohol is available in hotels and licensed venues, but not everywhere. Be polite and patient when bargaining in markets, and say no firmly but politely to persistent sellers.

Baggage and fares

Charter and package flights usually include a hold bag, while some flight-only fares do not. Check the allowance before you buy, particularly if you plan to take snorkelling gear or souvenirs.

Our comparison of basic and standard fares explains what changes between fare types, and the guide to carry-on size rules explains cabin bag limits.

Money, tipping and scams

The Egyptian pound is the local currency. Take pounds or dollars to exchange at banks or official bureaux, and avoid street changers. Cards are accepted in hotels and big shops, but cash is needed for tips and markets.

Prices for tourists can be higher than for locals, so agree prices before you start, especially for taxis and tours. Be wary of anyone offering free help that leads to a shop, and keep your valuables secure.

Scuba diving for beginners and the experienced

Egypt is among the world's cheapest places to learn to dive, with Open Water courses taking three to four days. Famous sites include the Thistlegorm wreck, Ras Mohammed and the Brothers Islands, though some are for experienced divers.

Check that the centre is PADI or SSI certified, ask about group sizes and read recent reviews. Check your travel insurance covers diving to the depth you plan, and do not fly within 24 hours of your last dive.

Travelling with children

Egypt is popular with families, thanks to warm weather, kids' clubs and shallow bays. The flight is under six hours, which suits children, and all-inclusive hotels make costs predictable.

Choose a hotel with a good children's pool and shade, and pack sun hats and rash vests. Check the airline's rules on seats and pushchairs. Our family vacations service can help find a suitable hotel.

Mistakes to avoid

What goes wrong most is visiting in midsummer without realising how hot it is, buying a cheap package without checking the hotel reviews, ignoring the Foreign Office advice and exchanging money on the street.

Less obvious ones include forgetting visa costs, underestimating the tip money you will need and booking an excursion from a street seller. A little preparation avoids most of them.
