Route Guide

Cheap Flights from London to New York

It is one of the busiest long-haul routes in the world, with six or seven airlines competing. That helps prices, but only if you know where to look and when.

A route with a lot of competition

London to New York is one of the most heavily flown routes on the planet, and more than half a dozen airlines compete on it. British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American, Delta, United and JetBlue all fly from London, some from more than one airport, and they offer a wide range of cabins and fares.

That level of competition means good deals do appear, often in the quieter months. It also means prices vary by hundreds of pounds between airlines and days, so shopping around matters more here than on most routes.

Heathrow, Gatwick or elsewhere?

Heathrow (LHR) has by far the most flights, with British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American, Delta, United and JetBlue, and it is the best choice for flexibility and connections. Gatwick (LGW) has fewer transatlantic flights but sometimes lower fares, and it suits people living south of London.

Heathrow is easy to reach by the Elizabeth line and the Piccadilly line. Gatwick has fast trains from Victoria and London Bridge. Compare fares and the cost of getting there, and look at regional airports with a connection if you live far from London. Our Heathrow airport guide explains the terminals.

JFK or Newark?

John F. Kennedy (JFK) is the larger airport, and it is the main destination for most London flights. It is in Queens, about an hour from Midtown by subway or train, and has several terminals, with British Airways and American using Terminal 7 and 8, and others in different ones.

Newark (EWR) in New Jersey is closer to Midtown by train, about 30 to 40 minutes via NJ Transit from the airport to Penn Station, and it suits those staying on the west side or heading to New Jersey. United is the main airline. Check both, since fares and times differ. Our JFK airport guide explains how to get into the city.

Which side of the Atlantic is cheaper to buy from?

Prices for the same flight can differ depending on where you buy it and in which currency, so try the UK version of a booking site and compare with a dollar price converted at the current rate. Bank and card exchange rates make a difference, so use a card with no foreign transaction fees.

Return flights that start in New York are not always cheaper, and they come with US taxes and different rules, so for a UK-based trip, start from London. The cheapest fare is usually the one that starts at your home airport.

Flight time and the time difference

A flight from London to New York takes about eight hours, and the return is around seven because of the tailwind. New York is five hours behind the UK, with a short period each spring and autumn when the gap changes by an hour, since the US and UK switch clocks on different dates.

Most outbound flights leave in the morning or early afternoon and arrive in the afternoon or evening, so you can have a full day on arrival. Return flights are mostly overnight, landing in the morning in London.

The airlines and their cabins

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are the UK carriers, and each has a full range of cabins, from economy to first. American, Delta and United fly from London with their own products, and JetBlue offers its Mint business class and a lower-cost economy.

Look at the seat type and the services as well as the price. A premium economy seat on a long flight is a very good compromise. Our pages on British Airways and Delta explain what they offer.

The cheapest months

January to March, apart from February half-term, and November, are generally the cheapest months. Autumn weeks in September and October offer good weather and fairer prices, and early December before Christmas can also be good value.

Summer is the most expensive, and the weeks around Christmas and New Year are peak. Big events, such as the US Open tennis in late summer, the New York Marathon in early November and Thanksgiving, raise hotel prices and push flights up.

A five-night budget, honestly

Flights are only part of the bill. A mid-range hotel in Manhattan in spring can cost £200 or more a night, and a couple spending £60 a head on meals and £40 a day on transport and entry fees can easily add £1,500 to the flights. Brooklyn, Queens and Jersey City hotels can be much cheaper, with a short subway or ferry ride.

Savings come from visiting in winter, staying outside Midtown and eating at delis, food trucks and pizza slices. A flight in January that is £200 cheaper than one in May usually comes with cheaper hotels too, so shifting the date saves twice.

When to book

For summer and the holidays, book at least four to six months ahead. For quieter months, two to three months is usually enough, and sales appear regularly.

Set a price alert and look at it every few days. Our guides to tracking fare drops and how far in advance to book international flights explain how, and the best time to book flights in 2026 gives the broader picture.

ESTA and entry to the US

British citizens travelling to the US for tourism or business of up to 90 days need an approved ESTA, the Electronic System for Travel Authorization. You apply online through the official US government website, pay a fee, which was raised in 2025 and is now around 40 dollars, and approval usually lasts two years.

Apply at least 72 hours before travel, and use only the official site, since look-alike websites charge more. Your passport must be valid for the length of your stay and be an e-passport. Rules change, so check the official site before you book.

Premium economy and business class

Premium economy gives a wider seat, more legroom and better service for a modest premium over economy, and it is excellent value on an eight-hour flight. Business class, such as British Airways' Club Suite and Virgin Atlantic's Upper Class, offers lie-flat beds and lounge access.

Business fares drop in sales, particularly in winter, and can be much cheaper than usual. Our guide to business class versus premium economy helps you decide, and our business class routes pages explain more.

Package holidays and city-break deals

Packages that combine flights and hotels, often sold by tour operators, can be good value and carry ATOL protection. They are often cheaper than booking separately, particularly for a weekend or a week.

Check which hotel and which airport are included, and what is not. Our vacation packages service and city tours service can compare options and arrange extras.

Getting into Manhattan

From JFK, the AirTrain connects to the subway and the Long Island Rail Road, taking 45 minutes to an hour to Midtown. Taxis charge a flat fare of around 70 dollars plus tolls and a tip, and rideshares vary.

From Newark, the AirTrain links to NJ Transit trains and Amtrak, reaching Penn Station in about 30 minutes. Allow extra time during rush hour, and avoid unlicensed drivers who approach you in arrivals.

Tipping, tax and the real cost of New York

Prices in New York are shown without sales tax, and tipping is expected, around 18 to 20 percent in restaurants and a dollar or two per drink at bars. These can add 25 to 30 percent to the bill compared with the price on the menu.

Hotels also charge taxes and sometimes resort fees. Budget for these extras, and use a card with no foreign transaction fee. Many visitors are surprised by how fast the costs add up.

Theatre, sport and events

Broadway tickets are cheapest for matinees and midweek shows, and many theatres have same-day lotteries and rush tickets. TKTS booths sell discounted tickets on the day, and apps make it simple to check. Beware of resellers selling tickets at inflated prices.

Baseball, basketball and ice hockey games are good value for a first visit, and the US Open and the New York Marathon are big draws that push up flight prices. If an event matters, book early, and if you want a quiet visit, avoid those weeks.

Health insurance: do not skip it

The UK has no reciprocal healthcare agreement with the US, and medical treatment is very expensive. Even a short hospital stay can cost thousands of pounds. Travel insurance with high medical cover, at least a million pounds, is essential.

Check that your policy covers the US, and that any existing conditions are declared. Keep a copy of the policy with your documents.

Customs, immigration and arrival

US immigration can be slow, and queues of an hour or more are common in the afternoon when several flights land together. You will give fingerprints and have a photograph taken. Have your ESTA confirmation, your address in New York and your return details ready.

Do not bring fresh fruit, meat or plants, and declare any food. Be honest with officers and answer questions simply. Allow at least three hours for a connection after an international arrival.

Connecting onward and nonstop alternatives

If you want to continue to other US cities, a connection in New York can be easy, but it requires immigration and a re-check of bags. Booking a through ticket to your final destination is safer.

Aer Lingus offers connections through Dublin, where you clear US immigration before you fly, which can make arrival in New York much quicker. Our guide to tight layovers explains how to judge a connection.

Christmas and New Year in New York

New York is especially popular in December, with the Rockefeller Center tree, ice skating, shop windows and New Year's Eve in Times Square. Flights and hotels are among the most expensive of the year, and the weeks from about 18 December to 2 January are peak.

If you can go in the first two weeks of December, fares are much lower, and the decorations are already up. Book early, and wrap up warmly, since temperatures often fall below freezing.

What to do on a first visit

A first trip might include Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum, the High Line, Brooklyn Bridge and a Broadway show. Add the Statue of Liberty ferry, Times Square and a baseball game if the season is right.

Walk a lot, use the subway, and book popular attractions ahead of time. Four to five nights is a comfortable length for a first visit, and a week lets you see more of the boroughs.

Mistakes to avoid

People most often trip up by forgetting ESTA, buying travel insurance with low medical cover, booking a tight connection and underestimating how long it takes to get through US immigration.

A few more to avoid: comparing prices without tax and tip, booking a hotel far from the subway and not allowing for jet lag. A little care in advance makes the trip more relaxed.
