Cheap Flights to Cape Verde from the UK

Cape Verde is the warmest winter sun option within a six-hour flight, with temperatures up to about 26 degrees in winter. OAG counted 138 UK flights there at Christmas 2025, so choice is smaller than the Canaries but growing.

Why Cape Verde keeps growing

Cape Verde, a group of volcanic islands off the coast of West Africa, has been a favourite of British sun seekers since TUI began flights there in 2005. OAG counted around 138 scheduled UK flights there over the 2025 Christmas fortnight, much fewer than the Canaries but enough to make it a regular winter choice.

The appeal is simple. It is under six hours from the UK, the weather is warm and dry in winter, with temperatures up to about 26 degrees, and the resorts are mainly all-inclusive, with long sandy beaches and good value. It also has no time difference from the UK for much of the year, or an hour, so jet lag is mild.

Cape Verde versus the Canaries: an honest comparison

The Canaries have far more flights, cheaper last-minute deals, more variety of hotels and much more to do away from the beach. Cape Verde has warmer winters, more reliable sun and wide empty beaches, but fewer flights and facilities. For a first winter sun trip, the Canaries are easier.

If you have been to the Canaries several times and want something different, or if you want the hottest weather within six hours, Cape Verde is a good option. Our guide to the Canary Islands compares the options in more depth.

Sal or Boa Vista?

Sal (SID) is the busiest and has the most flights. The resort area of Santa Maria has a long beach, a pier, restaurants and water sports, and the island is flat and dry. Boa Vista (BVC) is quieter, with huge empty beaches, sand dunes, and a mix of big all-inclusive resorts and the town of Sal Rei.

Sal has more variety and nightlife, and Boa Vista offers more space and a feeling of remoteness. Both are good for windsurfing and kitesurfing, with strong winds from November to March. Other islands, such as Sao Vicente and Santiago, are served by domestic or inter-island flights.

A realistic week: what to expect

Cape Verde suits people who want a simple beach holiday. Expect sunshine most days, a breeze that can make evenings cool, large hotels with several pools, and few distractions beyond the beach. It is not a place for historic sightseeing, and it is quieter and less developed than the Canaries.

Many visitors rent a quad bike or take an island tour for one or two days and spend the rest relaxing. If you like a lively resort with lots of choice of restaurants, Sal is better than Boa Vista, and if you prefer space and peace, choose Boa Vista.

Flight time and the time difference

The flight from the UK to Sal or Boa Vista takes about six hours, depending on the airport. Cape Verde is one hour behind the UK all year, because it does not use daylight saving time, so the difference is one hour in winter and two hours in British Summer Time.

Flights usually leave in the morning or at midday, and arrive in the afternoon. Some leave overnight. Check transfer times, since hotels on Boa Vista can be up to 45 minutes from the airport.

Which UK airports fly there

TUI is the main operator, flying from many UK airports, including Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, East Midlands, Bristol, Glasgow and Newcastle. Jet2 and other airlines have added flights, and TUI has added new winter flights from Birmingham, Glasgow and East Midlands.

Frequencies are lower than the Canaries, with some routes only a few times a week, so check the schedule. Flights usually leave on set days, and package holidays often run for seven or fourteen nights.

Weather and the best months

Cape Verde is dry and warm all year. From November to March, daytime temperatures are around 24 to 26 degrees, with strong winds, good for windsurfing but less pleasant on exposed beaches. April to June is warm and calmer, and July to October is hot and humid, with the rainy season from August to October.

The best months for most holidaymakers are November to June. Winter is the busiest and most expensive, especially at Christmas, New Year and February half-term, and prices drop in spring.

School holidays and prices

As with other winter sun spots, prices are highest in school holiday weeks. A seven-night all-inclusive package for a family of four can cost thousands of pounds in the February half-term and a fraction of that in early November or late January.

If you are not tied to school dates, the cheapest and most pleasant weeks are often early to mid-November and mid-January to early February. Check the winds, since they are strongest from December to February.

When to book

For the winter peak, book as early as you can, ideally eight to ten months ahead, since seats are limited. For other times, three to five months is usually enough.

Switch on an alert for the route and watch it for a week or two. If you want the detail behind that advice, read tracking fare drops and the best time to book flights in 2026.

Entry requirements and fees

British citizens do not need a visa for Cape Verde for tourist stays, but you must register online with the EASE system before arrival and pay an airport security fee, currently around 31 euros, which is often collected with your registration. Your passport should be valid for at least six months.

Rules and fees change, so check the official Cape Verde government and UK Foreign Office websites before you travel. Print your registration confirmation, since you may need it at check-in.

Package holidays and ATOL

Most British visitors book a package with TUI or Jet2holidays, which includes flights, transfers and an all-inclusive hotel, with ATOL protection. Prices can be good value, particularly outside school holidays.

Flight-only options are limited, and independent travel is more complicated. Our all-inclusive resorts service and vacation packages service can compare options.

All-inclusive hotels: what to expect

Hotels on Sal and Boa Vista are mostly large beachfront resorts with pools, entertainment and several restaurants. Quality ranges from three to five stars, and reviews are very helpful. Many hotels have kids' clubs, making them popular with families.

Food is mostly international buffet style, and local dishes such as cachupa, a stew, are worth trying. Imported drinks may cost extra. The sea can have strong currents, so swim at beaches with lifeguards or hotel beaches.

Music, food and local culture

Cape Verde has a rich musical heritage, including morna, the melancholic style made famous by Cesaria Evora, and the livelier funana and coladeira. Live music is easy to find in Santa Maria and Sal Rei in the evenings.

Try cachupa, a slow-cooked stew of corn and beans, fresh grilled fish, and local grogue, a sugar-cane spirit. Eating in local restaurants outside your hotel supports the community and gives a taste of daily life.

Watersports, wind and waves

The strong winds from November to March make Cape Verde one of the best places in the Atlantic for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Sal has schools in Santa Maria, and Boa Vista has spots for all levels.

Other activities include snorkelling, sailing, fishing, diving and turtle watching. Loggerhead turtles nest on Boa Vista and Sal from June to October, and responsible tours are offered at night. Choose operators that follow the rules.

Things to do beyond the beach

Sal has salt pans at Pedra de Lume, where you can float in a crater lake, and the blue eye at Buracona. Boa Vista has dune landscapes, the Viana desert and a shipwreck on the beach. Quad bike and buggy tours are popular.

Excursions to other islands, such as Santiago and Sao Vicente, take you into the culture and music of Cape Verde. Morna music and the legacy of Cesaria Evora make evenings special.

Health, safety and sun

Cape Verde is generally safe and friendly, but petty theft occurs, so keep valuables in the hotel safe. Use high-factor sun cream, drink bottled water and be careful with the strong Atlantic currents.

Check the NHS Fit for Travel website for vaccinations, and buy insurance. The GHIC does not cover Cape Verde. Medical facilities are limited on the smaller islands, so insurance with evacuation cover is wise.

Which hotel type suits whom

Big all-inclusive resorts suit families and groups who want everything on site, with pools, kids' clubs and entertainment. Smaller aparthotels in Santa Maria suit couples and independent travellers who want to eat out and explore. Boa Vista's resorts are further from the village, so they feel more secluded.

Read recent reviews on the food, the cleanliness and the state of the beach in front of the hotel, as Atlantic swell and seaweed vary. A hotel with a calm, sheltered beach is a big plus with young children.

Baggage and fares

Package holiday flights usually include a hold bag. Flight-only fares may not, so check the allowance before you buy. If you plan to take watersports equipment, check the airline's rules on sports gear.

Our guide to carry-on size rules explains the cabin bag limits, and the page on basic and standard fares explains how fare types differ.

Other islands worth a trip

If you want more than a beach, consider an inter-island flight to Santo Antao, which has some of the best hiking in the Atlantic, to Fogo, with its active volcano, or to Santiago, with the old town of Cidade Velha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

These trips need more time and planning, and flights between islands are limited. Book through a reputable operator, and allow a buffer before your flight home.

Money and costs

The Cape Verdean escudo is the local currency, and euros are widely accepted in tourist areas. Cards work in hotels and some restaurants, but cash is needed for markets and taxis. ATMs are available in Santa Maria and Sal Rei.

All-inclusive stays keep costs predictable, but excursions and drinks outside the hotel add up. Tipping is appreciated, though not obligatory.

Families and couples

Cape Verde is popular with families because of calm bays, kids' clubs and warm weather, and with couples looking for a quiet beach holiday. The short flight and small time difference make it easy with children.

Our family vacations service and honeymoon travel service can help find the right resort.

Practical tips for the first day

Allow time at the airport on arrival, since immigration queues can build when several flights land together. Have your EASE registration and passport ready, and change a small amount of money for tips.

Drink bottled water, use sun cream even on windy days and swim between the flags. Wind can make the beach feel cool while the sun burns, a trap for first-timers.

Delays, cancellations and your rights

Flights to Cape Verde operate less frequently than to the Canaries, so a delay or cancellation can leave you waiting a day or more. Check your package's protection and keep records.

Should your flight be disrupted, UK rules can entitle you to refreshments, a rebooking or a refund, and occasionally compensation. For the details of what to claim, see delay and cancellation rights.

Mistakes to avoid

What goes wrong most is booking late for peak weeks, forgetting the EASE registration and fee, choosing a beach that is too windy for swimming, and ignoring the distance between the airport and the hotel on Boa Vista.

Also common: underestimating the strength of the currents, not checking baggage rules for sports gear and booking a hotel without reading recent reviews.
