Cheap Flights to Madeira and the Algarve from the UK

Jet2 launched Madeira and Faro winter programmes from its UK bases, and both are popular winter and shoulder-season breaks. This guide explains how to choose and when to book.

Two Portuguese options with different characters

The Algarve, in southern mainland Portugal, is a long coast of golden cliffs, coves and golf resorts that has been a British favourite for decades. Madeira, an island in the Atlantic about 600 km off the coast of Morocco, is mountainous and green, with flowers, hiking trails and a mild climate all year.

Jet2 and Jet2holidays include both in their winter sun programmes, with flights from bases across the UK, including new departures from Bournemouth. Both are less hot than the Canaries in winter, but more varied, which suits travellers who want sightseeing as well as sun.

Which one should you choose?

Choose the Algarve for beaches, golf, family resorts and the widest choice of flights and hotels. Choose Madeira for walking, scenery and gardens, and a quieter, greener holiday. Choose both only if you have at least ten days, and book separate flights, since they are not easily linked.

If you are not sure, check the flights from your nearest airport on your dates. The one with the better schedule and price will often make the decision for you, and you can save the other for another year.

Flight times and the time difference

Faro is about two hours 45 minutes from London, and Madeira about four hours. Portugal's mainland and Madeira use the same time as the UK all year, so there is no time change to worry about.

Madeira's airport is famous for its dramatic runway built on stilts and for its windy conditions. Flights are sometimes diverted or delayed by wind, so leave a buffer on your return day.

A realistic comparison of costs

A week in the Algarve in May, half board in a three-star hotel, might cost £500 to £850 per person as a package, and £1,000 or more in August. Madeira can cost slightly more, since flights are longer and hotels are fewer. Both are cheaper in winter, apart from Christmas and New Year.

As an example, a family of four might pay £2,200 for a week in Albufeira in early October and £4,500 in the first week of August. The destination does not change, only the date, which is why it is worth checking more than one week.

Which UK airports fly there

Faro is served from nearly every UK airport, by Jet2, easyJet, Ryanair, TUI and others. Madeira has flights from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford and others, with Jet2, easyJet and TUI.

Check your local airport first, and compare the cost of getting to a second one. Frequencies are lower in winter, and some routes run only a few times a week.

The Algarve: where to base yourself

Albufeira is the busiest resort, with a lively old town and big hotels. Vilamoura is smart, with a marina and golf, and Lagos and Carvoeiro have lovely beaches and old town charm. Tavira and the eastern Algarve are quieter and more Portuguese.

The western coast near Sagres is wilder and surf-friendly. Hire a car if you want to explore, and note that Faro airport is close to many resorts, with transfers of 20 to 60 minutes.

Madeira: where to stay and what to do

Funchal is the capital, with hotels, restaurants and a cable car, and it is the usual base. Calheta and Porto Moniz offer pools and quieter resorts, and Santana has traditional houses.

Madeira is famous for its levadas, irrigation channels with walking paths through lush landscapes, and for its cliffs, flowers and wine. It is not a classic beach destination, as beaches are mostly pebbly, but hotels have sea pools and swimming platforms.

Madeira's flower festival and New Year fireworks

Madeira hosts the Flower Festival in April or May, with parades and floral carpets in Funchal, and one of the world's biggest New Year fireworks displays over the bay. Both draw crowds, and flights and hotels rise accordingly.

If you want to see them, book very early, as hotels in Funchal sell out months ahead. If you want a quiet trip, avoid those weeks and visit in March or October instead.

Weather and the best months

The Algarve is warm and sunny from April to October, hot in July and August, and mild in winter, with daytime highs of around 16 to 18 degrees. Madeira is temperate all year, with highs of about 19 to 21 degrees in winter and 25 in summer, and more rain on the north coast.

The best months for both are April to June and September to October, with warm weather and fair prices. Madeira is also popular at Christmas and New Year, with famous fireworks, and in May for the flower festival.

When to book

For Christmas, New Year and July and August, book as early as you can, ideally eight to ten months ahead. For spring and autumn, three to five months is usually enough.

Turn on a fare alert and glance at the trend a few times a week. Tracking fare drops and the best time to book flights in 2026 cover the how and the when in more detail.

Entry rules after Brexit

Portugal is in the Schengen Area, so British visitors can stay up to 90 days in any 180. Your passport must be valid for at least three months after you leave and less than ten years old on arrival.

The EU's Entry/Exit System has been phasing in biometric checks since late 2025, which can lengthen queues, and ETIAS is planned. Check the official information. Allow extra time at Faro and Funchal in summer.

Walking the levadas safely

The levadas are narrow paths running alongside irrigation channels, and many are safe and rewarding. A few include tunnels, steep drops and slippery sections, and several walks have closed after storms or fires.

Check the official Madeira walking site for current closures, wear shoes with grip, carry a torch for tunnels and take water. Hire a guide for harder routes, and do not walk alone on difficult paths.

Package or flight-only?

Packages from Jet2holidays, TUI and others include flights, a hold bag and transfers with ATOL protection, and can be good value, particularly in winter and shoulder seasons. Flight-only suits villa rentals and self-catering.

Compare both for your dates. Our vacation packages service and beach hotels service can help.

Golf, walking and activities

The Algarve has some of Europe's best golf courses, with winter packages popular with British golfers, and the Rota Vicentina offers coastal walks. Madeira's levada walks suit all abilities, and canyoning, paragliding and whale watching are available.

Book popular walks and tours ahead in peak weeks, and wear proper footwear. Some levada paths are narrow with drops, so take care in wet weather.

Food and drink

Portuguese food is simple and good, with grilled fish, cataplana seafood stew, pastel de nata custard tarts and cheap wine. On Madeira, try espetada beef skewers, bolo do caco bread, fresh tuna and poncha, a sugar-cane spirit.

Meals are good value, particularly at lunch with the dish of the day. Tap water is safe. Tipping is modest, around 5 to 10 percent.

Baggage and fares

On Jet2 and TUI the hold bag is part of the price, while easyJet and Ryanair sell bags as add-ons that cost more at the airport than online. If you plan to bring back wine or port, a hold bag is worth having, and golfers should check the airline's rate for clubs.

Our guide to carry-on size rules lists the usual cabin limits, and the comparison of basic and standard fares shows what the cheapest tickets leave out.

The Algarve beyond the beach

Away from the coast, the Algarve has cork forests in the Serra de Monchique, hot springs, whitewashed villages such as Alte, and the Ria Formosa lagoon near Faro, which you can explore by boat. Silves has a red sandstone castle and Lagos has a historic old town.

Many of these are an easy half-day trip from the main resorts, and a hire car or a tour makes it easy. Eat in small restaurants away from the seafront, where prices are lower and the food is more local.

Money and costs

Portugal is the cheapest of the western Mediterranean-style destinations for eating out: a grilled fish lunch with wine can cost less than a pub sandwich in London. Madeira runs a little dearer because most goods arrive by ship.

Cards are accepted nearly everywhere and the euro is the currency. On the Algarve motorways, some tolls are electronic only, so ask your car hire firm how they are charged before you set off.

Health, sun and the GHIC

Your UK GHIC covers state treatment in Portugal on the same terms as local residents, but not private clinics, repatriation or cancelled trips, so keep insurance as well. Pharmacies are easy to find and pharmacists will advise on minor ailments.

On the Algarve the sun is strong even in spring, and on Madeira the temperature falls quickly with altitude, so a light fleece is useful for the mountain viewpoints.

Families and couples

The Algarve suits families with sandy beaches, water parks and kids' clubs, and couples with romantic coves and fine restaurants. Madeira suits couples and active travellers, with scenery and quiet hotels.

Our family vacations service and honeymoon travel service can help plan the details around your flights.

Christmas and New Year in Portugal

Madeira and the Algarve are popular for a winter break, with mild weather and festive lights. Hotels and flights are priced at a premium from 20 December to 3 January, and many require minimum stays.

If you are flexible, travel on the days around Christmas Day itself, or wait until the second week of January for lower prices. Packages often include a gala dinner, so check for supplements.

Delays, wind and your rights

Madeira's winds can cause diversions and delays, so build in a buffer. Should your flight be disrupted, UK rules can entitle you to refreshments, a rebooking or a refund, and occasionally compensation.

Photograph your boarding pass and receipts, and use the app to sort out a new flight. Our guide to delay and cancellation rights sets out what you can ask the airline for.

Quiet corners and slower trips

If you want to avoid the busiest resorts, base yourself in Tavira or Carvoeiro on the Algarve, or in Calheta or Santana on Madeira. These offer smaller hotels, quieter beaches and local restaurants, and often cost less than the big names.

A slow week, with a few walks, a boat trip and long lunches, suits Portugal better than a packed itinerary. Avoid the middle of August if you can, and consider October, when the sea is warm and the crowds have gone.

Mistakes to avoid

The mistakes we see most are choosing a hotel far from the beach in the Algarve without a car, expecting Madeira to be a beach destination, booking late for Christmas and ignoring wind delays.

Other slips: forgetting passport validity, underestimating the cold evenings in winter and not allowing time for road tolls. A little planning avoids most of them.

A day in Funchal and a day in Faro

Funchal is best explored on foot, starting with the old town and the Mercado dos Lavradores market, then the cable car up to Monte for gardens and the toboggan ride down. The seafront promenade and Sao Tiago fort are pleasant for an evening walk.

Faro's old town, inside its walls, is small and charming, with a cathedral bell tower and a bone chapel. A boat trip into the Ria Formosa lagoon, with its islands and birds, is a restful way to spend a morning. Both are easy on a half-day basis, even with a hotel elsewhere.
