Cheap Flights to Orlando and Florida from the UK

Florida is the most popular long-haul family holiday for British travellers. The flight is about nine hours, and a few smart choices on dates, airports and extras can save a lot.

Why Florida remains a British favourite

Orlando has been Britain's favourite long-haul family destination for decades. It combines Disney, Universal and SeaWorld with warm weather, cheap car hire and plenty of villa rentals, and many families return year after year. Miami, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and the Gulf coast add beaches, cities and cruises.

The flight is about nine hours from London, and fares are keenly priced because of heavy competition and charter-style capacity. The cheapest times are not the ones most families choose, so a little planning can reduce the cost significantly.

Nonstop flights and where they leave from

Orlando (MCO) has nonstop flights from London Heathrow and Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh and other airports, with British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, TUI and some others. Orlando Sanford (SFB) has seasonal charter services, mostly with TUI.

Miami, Tampa and Fort Lauderdale have flights from London and Manchester. Fort Lauderdale is handy for cruises, and Tampa suits the Gulf coast. Compare airports and the car hire cost, since distances in Florida are large.

Orlando versus the other Florida destinations

Orlando suits families who want theme parks, Tampa and the Gulf coast suit beach lovers, and Miami and Fort Lauderdale suit city and cruise breaks. Prices for flights, hotels and car hire differ, so compare before you commit.

If you want parks and beaches in one trip, a week in Orlando followed by a week on the Gulf coast is popular, and an open-jaw ticket makes it simple. Check the one-way car hire fee, which can be high.

Flight time and time difference

The flight from London to Orlando takes about nine hours, and the return overnight is about eight. Florida is five hours behind the UK, with a short period each spring and autumn when the gap changes by an hour, because the US and UK switch clocks on different dates.

Outbound flights usually leave in the late morning or midday and arrive in the afternoon, so you can have an evening by the pool. The return flight leaves in the evening and lands the next morning, which is tiring with children.

Airlines and what they offer

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are the main full-service carriers, with TUI flying from regional airports and other airlines connecting through hubs. Low-cost carriers have occasionally flown the Atlantic, but schedules change.

Check what the fare includes, since baggage, seat selection and meals vary. Virgin Atlantic and British Airways offer premium economy, which many families find worth the extra on a nine-hour flight. Our page on British Airways explains its cabins.

What a fortnight really costs

A family of four flying from Manchester in the summer holidays might pay £3,000 to £4,500 for flights alone, then £1,500 to £2,500 for a villa, £500 to £800 for car hire and insurance, and £800 to £1,200 for park tickets. The same fortnight in early November can come to well under half of that total.

Those figures are examples, but the pattern is reliable. Add spending money at about £70 to £100 a day for a family of four, and you can see how much the date matters. Price two or three alternative weeks before you commit, and pick the one that fits your budget.

ESTA: what British visitors need

British citizens travelling to the US for tourism for up to 90 days need an approved ESTA. Apply online through the official US government website at least 72 hours before travel. The fee rose in 2025 and is now around 40 dollars, and approval usually lasts two years for multiple visits.

Each traveller, including children and babies, needs their own ESTA. Use only the official site, since look-alike sites charge more. Your passport must be an e-passport and valid for your stay, and rules change, so check before you book.

The cheapest months to go

The cheapest times are usually early November (before Thanksgiving), early December and January to mid-February, outside school holidays. September and October are cheap but come with hurricane season and heat.

The most expensive weeks are the school summer holidays, Christmas and New Year, February half-term and Easter. Prices for flights, villas and car hire rise together, and park queues are longest. If you can travel outside those weeks, you may save well over £1,000 for a family of four.

When to book

For summer, Christmas and Easter, book nine to twelve months ahead, since the cheapest seats and best villas sell first. For other times, four to six months is usually enough.

Switch on an alert for the route and watch it for a week or two. Our guides to tracking fare drops and the best time to book flights in 2026 explain how, and the page on how far in advance to book international flights gives the wider picture.

Package or flight-only?

Packages from TUI, Virgin Atlantic Holidays, British Airways Holidays and others include flights and accommodation, sometimes with tickets, with ATOL protection. Flight-only plus a villa often works out cheaper for a larger family.

Compare both for your dates and read what is included. Our vacation packages service and family vacations service can compare options.

Theme park tickets: where to save

Park tickets are a major cost. Multi-day tickets reduce the cost per day, and Disney and Universal each have their own pricing, with discounts for buying in advance. Check whether tickets from UK retailers or packages are cheaper than at the gate.

Lightning Lane and Express passes add to the cost, so decide whether you need them. Visit on weekdays outside school holidays for shorter queues. Our family vacations service can help organise tickets.

Disney, Universal or both?

Disney World has four parks, Universal Orlando has three, and each takes two to three days to do properly. For a first visit with young children, Disney's Magic Kingdom is hard to beat. For older children and thrill seekers, Universal's Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe, which opened in 2025, are strong draws.

Many families split a fortnight between the two. Plan one rest day by the pool for every three park days, and arrive at opening time. Queue times are lower on weekdays and in the shoulder months.

Car hire, tolls and insurance

Car hire in Florida is cheap compared with the UK, but extras add up. Pre-book to get the best price, and check what insurance is included. UK visitors often buy a separate excess cover, which is cheaper than the rental desk's.

Tolls are electronic on many roads, and rental companies charge a daily fee for their transponders. Ask how it works before you drive away. Our car rental service can compare options for you.

Villa or hotel?

A villa with a pool is popular with families and groups, and can be better value than two hotel rooms. Check the location, since some are far from the parks, and read reviews for cleanliness and maintenance.

Resort fees are charged at many hotels, often $30 to $50 a night, and are not always included in the price you first see. Compare totals, and check parking charges.

Beyond the parks: beaches, Kennedy Space Center and the Keys

Florida has more than theme parks. Cocoa Beach and Kennedy Space Center are about an hour from Orlando, the Gulf beaches at Clearwater and St Pete are 90 minutes away, and Miami and the Keys offer a different trip.

A two-centre holiday, a week in Orlando and a week on the coast, is a popular choice. An open-jaw ticket, flying into Orlando and home from Miami or Tampa, avoids backtracking. Our guide to multi-city versus round-trip tickets explains how.

Medical insurance: do not skip it

The UK has no reciprocal healthcare agreement with the US, and medical treatment is very expensive. Even a short hospital stay can cost thousands of pounds. Travel insurance with high medical cover, at least a million pounds, is essential.

Check that your policy covers the US, and that any existing conditions are declared. Keep a copy with your documents. Cover for theme park injuries and cancellations is also worth checking.

Hurricane season and flexible tickets

Hurricanes seldom hit Orlando directly, but tropical storms can close the parks and disrupt flights. If you travel from August to October, buy a flexible ticket or insurance that covers named storms, and buy it before a storm is named.

Airlines often waive change fees when a storm approaches, and the parks have refund policies. Keep an eye on the forecast from a week out, and have a plan for if you are delayed at either end.

Heat, storms and hurricane season

Florida is hot and humid in summer, with daily thunderstorms, and hurricane season runs from June to November, peaking from August to October. Check the forecast, carry water and sun protection, and plan outdoor activity for the morning.

Flexible tickets and insurance are sensible for late summer. If a storm is forecast, airlines often offer free changes. Keep an eye on the news.

Baggage and fares

Long-haul fares to Florida normally include a checked bag, but basic fares may not. Check the allowance, particularly if you plan to shop, as outlet malls are a draw.

Our comparison of basic and standard fares explains what changes between fare types, and the guide to carry-on size rules explains cabin limits.

Travelling with children

A nine-hour flight is a challenge for young children. Book seats together, choose a daytime flight outbound, bring snacks, entertainment and a change of clothes, and consider premium economy for the extra space.

US immigration can take an hour or more on arrival, so be prepared for queues with tired children. Our guide to travelling with a lap infant explains the rules for babies.

Pre-trip checklist for Florida

Four weeks before you go, check that every traveller has an approved ESTA and a passport valid for the stay. Two weeks before, book park tickets, dining reservations and any Lightning Lane or Express passes, and arrange car seats.

In the final week, check the weather, download the park apps, confirm your car hire and airport transfers, and pack a small bag of essentials for the plane. A written list stops arguments, and saves a lot of stress on the day.

Tipping, tax and the real cost

Prices in the US are shown without sales tax, and tipping is expected, around 18 to 20 percent in restaurants. These add 25 to 30 percent to the bill compared with the menu price.

Budget for these, and use a card with no foreign transaction fees. Groceries and eating at breakfast diners reduce food costs, and a villa with a kitchen helps.

Delays, cancellations and your rights

If your flight is delayed or cancelled, UK rules entitle you to care, rebooking or a refund, and compensation in some cases on flights departing the UK. Photograph your boarding pass and receipts, and use the app to sort out a new flight.

What an airline owes you after a delay is explained in delay and cancellation rights. Storms can disrupt flights, so allow a buffer.

Mistakes to avoid

Watch out for forgetting ESTA for every traveller, booking at peak times and paying for extras you do not need, underestimating car hire insurance and skipping medical cover.

A few more to avoid: visiting in August without realising the heat, choosing a villa too far from the parks, and ignoring resort fees. A little planning avoids most of them.
