February Half-Term 2027 Flights from the UK

For most English schools, February half-term falls on 15 to 19 February 2027. Fares jump for that single week, so a little planning now can save a family hundreds of pounds.

The dates to know

For most English local authorities, February half-term 2027 runs from Monday 15 to Friday 19 February. Some areas take a different week, and Scottish and Welsh schools have their own dates, so check with your school or council.

Many families therefore travel on the weekend of 13 and 14 February, returning on 20 or 21 February. Valentine's Day on Sunday 14 February adds demand for couples' breaks, and the Chinese New Year falls on 6 February 2027, which can raise some Asian fares earlier in the month.

Why half-term fares jump

A single week of school holiday concentrates demand, and airlines and tour operators raise prices accordingly. A flight that costs £90 a head in January can cost £250 or more in the half-term week, and hotel prices follow.

The jump is sharpest for sunny destinations, which are in demand in February, and for ski resorts. The good news is that the pattern is predictable, and you can work around it with early booking or by shifting a few days.

What 'cheap' means at half-term

At half-term, a good price is a relative idea. A family flight that is 20 percent below the average for that week might still cost more than the same trip in January, and the aim is to avoid the worst prices, not to find bargains. Decide on your budget, then look for the best option within it.

Prices differ between airlines and airports, so check at least two of each. A package that includes a bag and transfers may look dearer but can end up cheaper than a flight-only fare once the extras are added.

When to book

The best time to book half-term flights is as early as the schedules open, usually in the spring and summer of the year before. For February 2027, aim to book in the autumn of 2026, ideally by October or November, for the best choice.

Prices usually rise through December and January. Set a price alert as soon as you know your dates. How alerts work, and when fares tend to dip, is covered in tracking fare drops and the best time to book flights in 2026.

Winter sun: Canaries, Egypt, Morocco, Cape Verde and Dubai

February is peak winter sun season. The Canary Islands, Egypt, Morocco, Cape Verde and the UAE all offer reliable sunshine, and all are in demand. Jet2 added thousands of extra seats to the Canaries for the February half-term in past winters.

Our guides to the Canary Islands, Egypt, Marrakech and Dubai compare costs. Book early, since hotels sell out.

A sample comparison: the same week, four ways

As an illustration, a family of four might pay around £2,400 for a week in Tenerife in half-term, £2,000 for Paris by Eurostar with a hotel, £3,600 for a ski week in the Alps with flights and chalet board, and £5,000 for Florida. The same trips a fortnight earlier could cost 30 to 40 percent less.

These are only examples, since every family and package is different. The useful point is that the cheapest option is often a city break, and the most expensive are skiing and long-haul. Choose by what you want, then use dates to trim the cost.

Skiing and snow

February half-term is also the peak of the ski season in the Alps, Pyrenees and Andorra. Flights to Geneva, Innsbruck, Salzburg and Grenoble are expensive, and chalets and hotels often require Saturday-to-Saturday bookings.

If you want snow, book as early as you can, and consider a midweek package or a resort at lower altitude. Snow conditions in February are usually good. If you carry your own skis, check each airline's rules and fees for sports equipment before you book, since they differ widely.

City breaks and short trips

If you do not want to travel far, February is a quiet and affordable month for city breaks in Europe, even in half-term. Prague, Vienna, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome and Barcelona are all enjoyable in winter, and attractions are less crowded.

Hotel prices in many cities are lower than in summer. Our guide to cheap city-break flights from the UK covers the most popular short trips.

Day trips and staycations as alternatives

If flights and hotels look too costly, a UK break can still work. Edinburgh, the Lake District, Cornwall, Snowdonia and the Cotswolds are all quieter in February, though half-term still brings higher prices for cottages.

A hybrid option is a short trip within the UK by train, which avoids airport costs altogether. Compare the cost of a train and hotel in Edinburgh with a budget flight to Dublin, and you may be surprised by how close they are.

Long-haul: Florida, the Caribbean and Asia

Florida is a popular choice, with warm weather and shorter queues than in summer, and the Caribbean is in its dry season. Asia, such as Thailand, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, is also at its best, but prices are high.

Long-haul fares for half-term are among the most expensive of the year. If you plan to go, book as early as you can, and consider premium economy for the extra comfort. Our guides to Orlando and Thailand cover the options.

Cheaper options: shifting the dates

The easiest way to cut cost is to travel on the Saturday before half-term rather than the Friday, or to leave on a Tuesday. Flights on the first Saturday and the last Sunday are the most expensive, and midweek departures cost less.

If you can take a few days off, leaving on the Thursday before can save a lot. Check the return too, since a Friday return can be cheaper than a Sunday one. Use a flexible-date calendar to see the whole fortnight at a glance.

Regional airports and their schedules

Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, East Midlands, Leeds Bradford, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow all run strong half-term programmes to winter sun and city destinations. Jet2, TUI, easyJet and Ryanair fly from most of them.

Check your nearest two airports and the cost of getting there. A regional flight saves you a trip to London, and the airports are often calmer than Heathrow or Gatwick.

Booking tips specific to half-term

Book the flight and accommodation together if you can, to avoid ending up with a flight and no room. Check the cancellation terms, since you may want to move if prices drop. Add seat reservations for children, since airlines do not always seat families together.

Check your local school's inset days, which sometimes extend half-term by a day, and look at the dates of the half-term of neighbouring areas, as some families travel the week before or after. Flexibility around these dates can help.

Package or flight-only?

Packages from Jet2holidays, TUI and others can be good value at half-term, with a bag, transfers and ATOL protection included. Flight-only can be cheaper for city breaks and those staying with family.

Compare both for your dates, and read what is included. Our vacation packages service and family vacations service can compare options.

Taking children out of school

If you are tempted to take extra days off to save money, be aware that unauthorised absence can lead to fines. In England, fines are set nationally, currently £80 per child per parent if paid quickly, rising to £160 if paid late.

Check the rules with your school and council. Some families decide the saving is worth the fine, but others do not, once they count the risk of repeat penalties. A better approach is to book early to avoid the need.

Carnival, festivals and events in February

February has some great events: Venice Carnival, Nice Carnival, Rio's Carnival, which falls in early to mid February in 2027, and the Chinese New Year celebrations. Prices rise in those cities, and hotels sell out months in advance.

If you want to see one, book as early as you can. If you want to avoid the crowds, choose a destination without a big event in your week. A quick check of the local calendar can save hundreds of pounds.

Passports, EES and ETIAS

Check your passport now. For travel to the EU, it must be valid for at least three months after you leave and less than ten years old on arrival. Renewal can take weeks, particularly in winter and spring.

The EU's Entry/Exit System has been phasing in fingerprint and photo checks, which can lengthen queues, and ETIAS is planned. Check the latest official information before you travel, and allow extra time at the airport.

Valentine's weekend and Chinese New Year

Valentine's Day on Sunday 14 February 2027 will push up prices for romantic breaks in Paris, Venice, Rome and Lisbon, as well as spa hotels and beach resorts. If you want to go, book very early, or travel the weekend after.

Chinese New Year on 6 February 2027 brings large crowds in parts of Asia, and fares from the UK to Singapore, Hong Kong and China are higher around it. London and Manchester also have celebrations, which can be a fun, cheap alternative.

Weather and disruption in February

Winter storms can disrupt flights in the UK and Europe, and snow can close airports. Alpine routes in particular can be affected. Check the forecast, take an early flight where you can, and keep the airline's app handy.

If your flight is cancelled, rebook straight away. Our guide to delay and cancellation rights explains what you can ask for, and travel insurance can cover extra costs.

Getting to the airport at half-term

Airports are very busy on the first Saturday of half-term. Arrive at least three hours before your flight, book parking in advance and use fast track if the queues are long.

Check train and coach times, since engineering works and strikes sometimes affect weekends. If you have an early flight, an airport hotel the night before can be good value with parking included.

A simple three-step plan

First, fix your dates and a fallback week. Second, pick three destinations that suit the weather and budget, and check flights from your two nearest airports. Third, book the best total price, with bags and transfers included, and set a calendar reminder to check passports and insurance.

Do all three before the end of October if you can. Half-term trips booked early are cheaper, calmer and give you something to look forward to through the winter.

Travelling with children in winter

Pack warm clothing for the journey, even if you are heading to the sun, since UK airports are cold in February. Bring snacks, a charger and entertainment, and check the airline's rules on pushchairs and car seats.

Book seats together, since airlines charge for seat selection. Our guide to travelling with a lap infant explains the rules for babies.

A February holiday on a budget

Compare three options: a package to the Canaries or Egypt, a city break in a cheaper European city, and a trip in the UK. The cost per day is often lowest in cities such as Krakow, Budapest and Lisbon.

Look at the whole cost, including food, transport and activities. A cheaper hotel in a cheaper city may let you take a longer trip for the same money. Set a total budget before you search.

Mistakes to avoid

The usual slip-ups are booking late, assuming the cheapest day is the first Saturday, forgetting passport validity and choosing a resort without checking the weather and facilities in February.

A few more to avoid: ignoring baggage fees, skipping insurance and not allowing for airport queues. A little planning in autumn avoids all of them.
