Route Guide

Cheap Flights from the UK to Tenerife

Tenerife is the busiest winter sun route in the UK, with flights from almost every airport. The best fare depends on where you live, what time of year you go and which end of the island you are heading for.

A route flown from nearly every UK airport

Tenerife is the most popular winter sun destination for British travellers, and it is served from almost every airport in the country, from Aberdeen to Southampton. Jet2, easyJet, Ryanair and TUI all fly it, with British Airways and other airlines adding to the options from London.

That is good news if you live far from London, because you can often fly directly from your nearest airport. It is also why prices vary so much. For more on the Canary Islands as a whole, see our guide to cheap flights to the Canary Islands.

Check the small print on cheap Tenerife fares

A low fare to Tenerife can leave out the things you will need for a week: a cabin bag, a hold bag and a seat next to your travel companions. Check each of those before you pay, and add them if necessary, to see the real total.

Jet2 and TUI include bags in their standard fares, while Ryanair and easyJet charge extra for most of them. A Β£35 difference in the headline fare can vanish once you add a bag each way, so compare the total and pick the one that suits you.

Tenerife South or Tenerife North?

Almost all UK flights land at Tenerife South (TFS), in the dry, sunny south of the island, close to the resorts of Costa Adeje, Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos. Tenerife North (TFN), near La Laguna, has mainly domestic and inter-island flights, and a few European services.

If you want a classic beach holiday, fly to the South. If you prefer a quieter, greener side, such as Puerto de la Cruz, you can still fly to the South and drive for about 75 minutes, or use the bus. Check the transfer time before choosing your hotel.

Flight time and time difference

The flight from the UK to Tenerife takes about four and a quarter to four and three-quarter hours, depending on where you start. The Canary Islands use the same time as the UK all year, so there is no time change to worry about.

That makes Tenerife one of the easiest sun destinations for jet lag, and a good option for a short break. Morning flights often land in time for lunch by the pool, which is why they are popular, though they can be pricier.

The airlines and where they fly from

Jet2 has the biggest regional network, with flights from bases across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and a package-holiday arm. easyJet flies from London, Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow, and Ryanair from Stansted, Manchester, East Midlands, Edinburgh and others.

TUI flies from many airports, mainly in package holiday form. Compare flight-only and package prices, since one can be much cheaper than the other. Check each airline's bag rules, because they vary.

Flying from the regions: what to expect

If you live in Scotland, the North of England or Northern Ireland, you can often fly direct to Tenerife without going near London. That saves hours of travel and a hotel night, and it makes a week's holiday simpler. Smaller airports are usually quicker to get through than Heathrow or Gatwick.

Check each airport's schedule, since some routes run only a few times a week in winter. If your local airport does not have a direct flight on your dates, look at the next nearest one and compare the cost of getting there.

The cheapest months

May, June and September to early November, outside the October half-term, are generally the cheapest, and the weather is warm. January and early February are also cheaper, though the sea is cooler, and evenings are fresh.

The most expensive weeks are Christmas and New Year, the February and October half-terms and Easter, when flights and hotels rise sharply. If you can travel outside school holidays, you could save hundreds of pounds for a family.

The weather month by month

Tenerife's south enjoys sunshine all year, with winter temperatures around 20 to 23 degrees, and summer highs of 28 to 30. Winter evenings can be cool, and the north of the island is cloudier and more changeable.

The island's microclimates mean that you can be on a hot beach in the morning and in cool pine forest on the slopes of Mount Teide in the afternoon. Check the forecast for both areas if you are planning day trips.

When to book

For Christmas and half-terms, book as early as you can, ideally eight to ten months ahead for the best fares and rooms. For other times, three to five months is usually fine, and good deals appear regularly.

Put an alert on your dates and keep an eye on how the price behaves. Two of our guides go deeper: tracking fare drops and the best time to book flights in 2026.

Getting from the airport to your resort

Tenerife South airport is about 20 to 25 minutes from Costa Adeje and Playa de las Americas, 15 minutes from Los Cristianos, 45 minutes from Los Gigantes and about 75 minutes from Puerto de la Cruz. Buses run to the main resorts, and taxis charge fixed rates from the airport.

If you are on a package holiday, transfers are usually included. For flight-only, pre-book a shuttle or a taxi, and check the price before you set off. Hire cars are easy to pick up at the airport, and the roads are good.

Package or flight-only?

Packages with Jet2holidays, TUI and others include flights, a bag, transfers and ATOL protection, and in school holidays they can be better value than booking separately. Flight-only gives you more flexibility and is often cheaper outside peak weeks.

Compare both, and check what is included, particularly baggage and board type. Our vacation packages service and all-inclusive resorts service can help.

Hotel board types: room only, half board, all-inclusive

Tenerife hotels offer room only, bed and breakfast, half board and all-inclusive. All-inclusive is popular with families and gives certainty over costs, but eating out in local restaurants is cheap and part of the pleasure of the trip.

Compare the cost of an all-inclusive board with room only plus meals, and check what is included, such as drinks and snacks. If you want to explore, half board or bed and breakfast may suit you better.

Choosing your resort area

Costa Adeje is smart, with large hotels and good beaches. Playa de las Americas is lively, with bars and nightlife, and Los Cristianos is a working fishing town with a calm beach. Los Gigantes has dramatic cliffs, and Puerto de la Cruz in the north has a more Spanish feel and the Loro Parque zoo.

Think about what you want from the holiday, and pick the area before the flight, since transfers vary. Families often choose Costa Adeje, couples Los Gigantes or Costa Adeje, and groups Playa de las Americas.

Things to do beyond the beach

Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak at 3,715 metres, is the island's great attraction, reachable by cable car, with stargazing tours at night. Masca gorge, Loro Parque, whale-watching trips and Siam Park, one of the world's best water parks, are all popular.

Book Teide cable car tickets and permits for the summit in advance, since they sell out. A hire car for a day lets you reach the north and the mountains, and organised excursions are easy to arrange.

Entry rules and your passport

Check the passport now: three months of validity after leaving Spain, and an issue date within ten years. Visits can last up to 90 days in any 180; expect fingerprint and photo checks under the EU's Entry/Exit System.

Check the official EU pages for ETIAS, a planned pre-travel authorisation whose start date has changed several times. If you hold a UK GHIC, keep it with your passport, though travel insurance is still sensible.

Baggage and fares

Low-cost airlines allow a small under-seat bag free, and charge for larger cabin bags and hold bags. For a week's holiday, most people want at least a cabin bag or a hold bag, so compare the total price.

Jet2's fares include a hold bag and a cabin bag, which can make it better value than a cheaper headline fare. Our guide to carry-on size rules and the page on basic and standard fares explain the details.

Travelling with children

Tenerife is easy for families, with calm beaches, kids' clubs and water parks, and the flight is under five hours. Book seats together and check each airline's rules, since some charge extra to sit with children.

Pack snacks, entertainment and a change of clothes in the cabin bag. Hire car seats are expensive, so consider bringing your own, and check whether your accommodation provides cots.

Winter sun for retirees and long stays

Many British retirees spend several weeks or months in Tenerife in winter, since it is warm, affordable and easy to reach. If you plan a long stay, check the 90-day rule, particularly if you also visit other Schengen countries, and consider the cost of insurance.

Check the rules on residency and health cover for stays over 90 days. Buy flights with flexible return dates, or a one-way pair, if your plans are open.

Heat, sun and safety

The sun is strong all year, so use high-factor sun cream, a hat and plenty of water. Atlantic currents can be strong at some beaches, so swim where there are lifeguards and heed the flags.

Tenerife is generally safe, but petty theft occurs in busy areas. Keep valuables in the hotel safe and be careful with bags on beaches. Calima, a hot dusty wind from the Sahara, occasionally affects the island, particularly in winter.

Whale watching and boat trips responsibly

The waters between Tenerife and La Gomera are home to pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins all year, and boat trips from Los Cristianos and Puerto Colon are very popular. Choose operators that follow the local code of conduct and have the Cetacean-friendly label.

Avoid trips that promise to let you swim with or touch the animals, since that is harmful. Smaller boats with a naturalist guide provide a quieter experience, and booking online is usually cheaper than on the harbour.

Delays, cancellations and your rights

UK passenger rules can give you help, a new flight or a refund when a flight is delayed or cancelled, plus compensation in some cases. Winter storms can disrupt flights, and strong winds sometimes affect landings at the north airport.

Photograph your boarding pass and receipts, and use the app to sort out a new flight. If it happens, delay and cancellation rights tells you where you stand.

Money and costs

Tenerife uses the euro, and cards are accepted almost everywhere. Use a card with no foreign transaction fees, and choose to pay in euros if asked. Tipping is modest.

The island is good value, with cheap meals at local restaurants and affordable drinks, though tourist areas cost more. All-inclusive packages can be economical for families, particularly in the off-season.

Mistakes to avoid

What goes wrong most is booking at the last minute for school holidays, choosing a resort far from the airport without checking transfers, buying a cheap fare without a bag and forgetting passport validity.

Less obvious ones include underestimating the evening chill in winter, not booking Teide in advance and assuming the weather is the same in the north as in the south.
